SUBSTANCE-INDUCED PSYCHOSIS

Substance or medication induced psychosis is characterized by hallucinations and/or delusions, mainly paranoid in nature, due to the direct effects of using or withdrawing from drugs or medications.

Substance-induced psychosis is frequently observed in emergency rooms and rehab centers. It can be triggered by a variety of substances, such as alcohol, amphetamines, cannabis, cocaine, hallucinogens, phencyclidine (PCP), as well as some sedatives and hypnotics.

To be considered substance-induced psychosis, hallucinations and delusions must by greater than those that normally accompany a simple intoxication or withdrawal from the substance.
