THE MENTAL DISORDERS WE TREAT:

BENZODIAZEPINE ABUSE

Benzodiacepines (BZD) are drugs classified as depressors of the nervous system because they reduce or slow down mental processes.  At high doses, they can have negative effects on respiration and the heart.

When used for over six weeks without medical supervision, they may cause abuse and dependance. In such cases, people increase the dose and remain intoxicated until they can no longer be without the drug.

Benzodiazepines are the most widely abused drug in Mexico, and together with pain killers, are the group of drugs most used for suicide. In addition, when used without medical supervision they worsen pre-existing depression.

Medical treatment consists of gradual reduction of the drug as well as pharmacologic treatment to avoid withdrawal symptoms.

Addiction management is oriented to treat psychological, medical and psychiatric problems to avoid relapse.
