SUICIDE IDEATION ANDATTEMPT

Many factors determine suicide ideation and attempt, and suicide statistics are on the rise all over the world. Young people who are less apt to face and resolve problems and who have low tolerance to frustration are more susceptible to suicide.

Suicide is a process that begins with suicide ideation, and attempting suicide becomes an important risk to carry it out.  Suicide ideation and attempt are more frequent in women, although suicidal acts are more common in men.

Many factors are associated with suicidal ideation and attempt, such as economic conditions, academic performance, interaction and relationships with other young people, couples’ relationships, adolescence itself, sexual abuse, abandonment, unemployment, violence, lack of opportunities, perceived low social support, adverse events or the expectations of a professional future, amongst others.

Nevertheless, it is also important to note that adolescents may have non-suicidal harmful behaviors, autolytic ideas, as well as suicide attempt and consummated suicide. Thus, it is recommended to explore intentionality in young people to see if there is really a desire to “disappear”, or if these are forms to attract attention towards intense suffering without true suicide intention. This underlines the need for a mental health professional to investigate and analyze subjectivity, interactions, bonds and specific roles of those implied in appropriate intervention and management of the situation.
