Considering that your loved one probably will not accept treatment, but may be under a qualified psychiatric emergency, we can provide them with the attention they require by means of a simple and quick procedure done on admission with our help and management.
A qualified psychiatric emergency is a situation in which a person is having a serious mental health crisis that puts their life or the lives of others at risk, and that requires immediate intervention from mental health professionals or emergency medical services. These situations may include:
- Risk of suicide: The person is having suicidal thoughts, or plans or attempts suicide.
- Violent behavior: The aggressive or violent behavior of the person puts the safety of others at risk.
- Psychotic episodes: The person suffers hallucinations, delirium or a serious loss of contact with reality that may put their safety or that of others at risk.
- Acute decompensation of a mental disorder: Such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or borderline personality disorder, in which the person is not able to care for themselves.
- Severe substance abuse: The person has ingested dangerous amounts of drugs or alcohol or is in a state of withdrawal that puts their life at risk.
- Disorders in nutritional behavior: Severe malnutrition, multi-organ failure, electrolyte imbalance, or heart failure due to severe anorexia and/or bulimia.
The Mexican legal system considers situations as those mentioned above in the Ley General de Salud en México (General Health Act in Mexico):
“As from 17 May 2022, VARIOUS ORDERS OF THE GENERAL HEALTH ACT ARE REFORMED, ADDED AND DEROGATED IN MATTERS OF MENTAL HEALTH AND ADDICTION.
- Informed consent is the expression of conformity of a person in writing, for the realization of a health diagnosis or treatment.
- In the situation where a person cannot provide consent by any means for a treatment at a specific moment, an Advance Directive is lacking, and the individual’s health is in a state such that their life is under imminent risk or their physical integrity may suffer irreversible harm if treatment is not given immediately, the service provider will immediately preserve the life and health of the individual, providing written evidence in the medical record, and providing justified report to the Ethics Committee, and the competent authority.”
In such situations, it is essential to seek immediate care, either contacting emergency services, taking the person to a hospital or mental health clinic, or consulting a trained mental health professional.
Our personnel will accompany and advise you in this process.
